Unbound.

It is a lazy sunday summer afternoon as I place my bag on the lustrous teak wood table. I let out a mental sigh!  It requires Herculean effort to retrieve my laptop for work. I am a regular at the Longchamp cafe. It is normal for that cafe to play slow jazz while customers enjoy a cup of coffee but somehow the song , “Somewhere only we know”, booms on the speakers and breaks the monotonous commotion inside. In a split second, I transcend back to his arms. The song floods memories that are ready to pour out of my eyes. The barista snaps me out of my misery. He towers over the counter as he motions me to try the newly brewed concoction waiting on my table. I comply to do the needful as I am one of his unbiased coffee connoisseurs. The aroma of simmering hot coffee permeates my nose, calming my nerves.  I gulp down the bittersweet realisation. It has been close to two long months since I’ve last heard from him. It would be wishful thinking that our brief encounter would et...

Love, the victim

Dear mortal,

I keep searching for a reason, a word
to describe how you’ve carved me,
I am still a winged bird,
I don’t know how to spread them,
for all my life I’ve only spread my legs.

Dear mortal,

I apologize for my audacity,

but I am sure that won’t be a problem anymore,
I am as dead as one can be.

Dear mortal,
I don’t know if I can address you as a human
because that’s where the humanity comes into existence.
They told me to have faith, but faith is a luxury not all of us can afford.
And you took care of that.

Dear mortal,
they say “everything is uglier up close”
so tell me, when you came close, so undeniably close, was I the ugliest you have seen?
Because you decidedly felt the need to kill me.

Dear mortal,
thank you for protecting me from the desires of freedom,
for all, I can remember now is that
the cradle of pain rocks back and forth.

Dear Murderer, son, daughter,
I reach out to you this very moment, as just another victim
but listen to me speak for the last time
consider this an invite
for a young man to broaden his definition of manhood
for you to realize that rape is not a women’s issue, it’s a human issue
for my parents to always remember and love me
for all of you out there, get up and fight back
and most of all,
for all those culprits walking free,
to know that humanity still exists in parts of you.
The only way out is through.
